Changing used car purchase arrangement

Hi all

I just bought (ordered) a used car from a main dealer (in person). The deal is for a cash amount along with my old car as part-exchange. I paid a deposit and signed on the dotted line. The car will be available next week.

However, my situation has changed and I'm no longer able to give my old car as PX. I can fund the amount they offered for the PX using cash though. So they're essentially getting the exact same amount as is on the order form.

I can't get through to the dealer today so will likely have to wait until after the weekend to follow up, but wanted to check in with the experts here for some advice!

Is this likely to be an issue or should there be no problem? If they refuse to accept cash for the whole purchase do I lose my deposit?

The only cancellation info I can find in the T&Cs they provided relates to distance selling, which this isn't, so any advice you can arm me with would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks  :)

Can't see why they would refuse the deal if cash was offered instead of the P/X
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Well presumably they would be expecting to make a profit on the vehicle, e.g. they gave you £2000 for the car but hoped to sell it on for £2500. So in this case they would be £500 down on the deal.

True, but the £2,500 might not appear for s few weeks. And he'd have to service (or at least check) the car, possibly MOT, and pay commission to the salesman. £2,000 in the hand is probably better than £2,500 in the bush.

Yeh, this was my thinking (and my hope!) but a part me just thinks they'll be difficult based on @TadleyBaggie's theory. Hopefully their customer service will shine through on this one!

Most dealers don't really want part exchanges anyway, so not providing one shouldn't be a problem if you're paying the agreed cash price without the part exchange discount.

It wasn’t a problem when  I did a few years ago.

They will be likely shipping it straight off to auction if its a main dealer and not a model they would put on their forecourt. Cash removes risk and transportation for them.

Would be surprised if it causes an issue unless it is a car they really wanted on their forecourt.

100% this.  Unless the car being traded in is on brand and under five years / 50,000 miles it'll be heading straight for the transporter (via the workshop to have the codes reset if the MIL is on  :D)

Just for context, the PX car is only 2.5 years old and just over 20k miles.

While the car is different brand to the one of the dealership, they're part of a bigger group who have other dealerships of the same brand. So maybe that changes things a bit.

Either way, I'll try and get an answer today. These responses have given me some confidence that there shouldn't be a problem!

    Thanks all 👍

Out of interest why are you not able to hand over the old car? Has the car been written off in an accident?
