UC after A levels

Options
Hi, my son has just finished A levels and is hoping to go to uni in the autumn. Can he claim UC in the meantime? He is looking for work but most places want someone permanent. Thanks!

    Others will know more more.

If you are claiming Child Benefit for him, this stays in payment until the first Monday in September and UC is not payable

Agree, cannot claim UC, if you are claiming Child Benefit and/or have a UC claim including him as a child on claim.

And from September as a full time student most likely cannot claim UC, as he will need to apply for student finance.

The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

huckster you might know this, when are GCSE / A level students usually deemed to have come to the end of their course for UC purposes?

I'm just thinking if the OP doesn't claim UC and only Child Benefit, then the son claiming UC for a couple of months before uni would make the most financial sense - but it depends when A levels are deemed to have finished.

When a young person aged 16, 17, 18 or 19 leaves full-time non-advanced education or approved training, your entitlement to Child Benefit will usually end a few weeks later. For more information go to page 8, ‘Changes that can affect the amount of Child Benefit you’re entitled to’. You must tell us straightaway if any of these changes happen. If none of these changes happen, you’ll be entitled to Child Benefit up to and including the week that includes: • 31 August, when full-time non-advanced education or approved training finishes in June, July or August

What if there is a gap between finishing A levels and starting uni?

would the parents lose their UC and CB for their child who has now grown up and would the 18/19 year old make a claim in their own right?

    Q. If the 18/19 yr old child finishes A levels so basically finishes full time education but is not sure if will continue full time Education, the parents will still get UC and CB upto that next date in August?

If the child gets a part time job very low paid as well as uni or college full time education then will this affect how much UC the parents get?

If a child has finished A levels and intending to go to university then on their child's course end date, usually sometime in May or June,  the parent needs to report this change to UC. The child element for them will be removed from the parents claim in that AP.

If they're 18, once they've finished their A-levels the child can put in a claim for UC in their own right for the period prior to going to university, this of course means they will have job search and claimant commitments to agree too.
In my experience most young people want to spend this time between A-levels and starting university doing many different things, none of which include searching for jobs

Once at university, unless they have a disability which may qualify them for extra support, the student maintenance loan (whether taken or not) will zero any claim for UC.

They can't be full-time students and claim UC anyway, unless in one of the exception groups https://www.gov.uk/guidance/universal-credit-and-students#studying-full-time

Yes if they are still in full time ed then the parents can still get UC, right?

we are struggling to pay our rent and if our UC goes down we definitely can’t pay the rent.

i wonder how many households will consider sacrificing higher education for kids due to cost of living crisis?

Yes if they remain in full time education then child element continues until the 1st September following their 19th birthday. Did you have a read of that thread that KaMelo posted?

Is this related to your 16 year old that you asked about back in January this year?
