Bumped by Qantas from Direct to Indirect Flight

I paid Qantas for a direct flight from London to Perth Australia, on the return leg they bumped us to an indirect flight with Qatar that got us home 7 hours late to a different terminal.

I asked for a refund in the difference in cost between a direct flight and indirect flight (£400).  They refused.  Is there anything I can do about this?

I then asked for late flight compensation. They refused.  As they are not a UK carrier, does that mean the return leg is not covered by UK/EU rules on compensation?

that is correct. For the regulations to apply it either needs to be a UK/EU carrier or a flight departing from the UK/EU. You would need to look at Qantas Conditions of Carriage to see what (if anything applies)

Unfortunately, Qantas have a problem at present with the conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East which means the route has been altered and particularly when flying westbound, towards the UK, the winds can be against them. As a result, they have had to reduce the payload on a number of occasions to ensure the plane can get here without stopping off to refuel. Most people would take the view that Qatar is a far better airline in any event, although I appreciate it meant a transfer mid-way
