Nearly free gifts....

You've probably gotta be a bit warped and have a stupid sense of humour to appreciate this - fortunately, all my family are like minded!

For the past few Christmases (this one we didn't do it and are HUGELY regretting it!) we decided that as the family is expanding - sons, daughters getting married etc - having own children, that we would cut down on the presents we bought, exlcuding the little ones, bless them.

The challenge we set each other was to buy the most atrocious cheap thing we could for one another - preferably say from a down market charity shop, for no more than a pound, less the better. And whover got the cheapest/and or worst present won!

The first year my sister won, she managed to purchase very cheaply some lilac wool and crochet me a poodle toilet roll holder - even found some lilac coloured loo paper to go with it. It was dreadfully good.

The next year I got her some knitted bedsocks from a craft fair for 85p, they were made from a nasty nylon lurid type yellow yarn and had extremely pointed feet.

Last year, the other lot won again, I thought I'd definitely got it as had found a Darren Day cassette of one of his singles for my niece (30p). A jigsaw for my sister, nice picture, but the twist was we didn't know if it was complete! I really thought I'd got it in the bag, til I was presented with incontinence knickers (family member works at a care home), a broken pen desk set (obviously given as a free gift from a bank many moons ago) and an Engelbert Humperdinck LP.

We have had so much fun trying to find the 'worst' presents, more thought is put into them weirdly enough and we don't spend a fortune, quite the opposite. Oh, and the laugh we have opening all these awful gifts is priceless!

(I would at this point, like to apologise to Engelbert and Darren should they be on this site....)

Its worth a thought or two if you and your family are a tad daft like mine!:D

PS I'm getting pretty addicted to this site and may need therapy soon - still, as am back to work next week - early start and early night etc., that will get me off my backside, which is starting to spread from sitting on it so much!

    Hi Genie -

There is no cure for addiction to this place!!

My family has been doing a similar Christmas gift theme to yours in that there is a whole range of naff presents that we have all accumulated over the years that randomly gets sent to immediate family members. For instance, from memory, there is a naff scarf from 1984 that is floating around, three bottles of Yardley Gold aftershave and a box of wall sockets to name a few. My sister has been out of the country this year so it didn't happen but we also get in the habit of pinching an item out of each others houses throughout the year such as a discrete ornament when no one is suspecting it, and then wrapping that gift up for the said person. All adds to the fun especially when the kids are involved.

Among the charity shop finds that me and my friends give to each other in our santa sacks there has to be one really 'naff' pressie ..........there's always a debate then as to who received the most tasteless gift. She beat me this year with a knitted crinoline lady toilet roll cover !:j

Another friend who lives miles away doesn't bother with christmas pressies for her and her OH...........but last year the each had £1 to spend and the winner was the one who could get the most items i.e. 1 brillo pad - plus they had to prove it to each other with receipts..............lol:T

:T I'm going with some of those daft ideas for next year!

I love the idea of 'pinching' something from each others houses and re the 'floating' presents - I've now got a present in mind for my sister next year!

Glad I'm not the only mad person around - so gonna miss coming on here so often when go back to hell next week, I mean work.

Are you sure I can't get therapy for this addiction???

Something very similar, in my office we used to have a naff christmas decoration competition which had to cost less than £1.00. The prize was a musical globe that blew snow and the winner got to keep it until the following year. I was shopping with my granddaughter when she shouted across the shop "Do you think this decoration is naff enough for you Nana?"
