I’m currently renting through for social housing. For personal reasons I want to move out of the area and move nearer to my family thats in a different county.

I have a one bedroom ground floor flat with a bathroom that has been adapted due to my mobility needs. I’m suffering with a chronic illness and unable to walk very far due to spinal stenosis
Recently I’ve been diagnosed with a delusional mental health illness

I’m in receipt of housing benefit, personal Independence payments (enhanced x 2)  & ESA support group.

my question is……..can I register with another council, do I inform social housing of my intentions of wanting to move. Will I risk losing my flat if they know I’m wanting to move, perhaps i’ve explained that incorrectly what I’m trying to say is will they be awkward towards myself because I seem ungrateful for the flat that I have. I am very lucky to have a home, getting here was absolute hell “homelessness etc”

My last priory was A (High)

No one is going to throw you out just because you’re looking to move.

You need to check about the disabled facilities grant if that’s what was used to adapt your property because depending on when it was done you are not going to be eligible again if you need adaptations to a new property.

And moving to a new area, although you may have had high priority before, you are currently living in an adapted property and there will be people on the waiting list living in unsuitable places who will probably take precedence for places that are already adapted.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I agree that you won’t be as high a priority as when you were waiting for this property as you currently have a home. I think you might have a higher priority if you are moving to be closer to family who can support you with your health conditions compared to if it is just a choice to move.

It’d be useful for you to speak to the new council area and see if you can apply from out of area.

Do not give up your current property until you have signed for another one! Some people think they will be a greater priority if they are homeless but it is classed as making yourself intentionally homeless and can leave you eligible for no help at all.

You might be able to do a home swap with someone in the other area though this is unlikely to be a suitable swap unless they have similar adaptations. You can look into all possibilities such as registering with new area as being in need of family support however as you are currently adequately housed you would possibly be classed as low priority.
