Mutton_Geoff said:Aerodynamic drag is the square of speed so 50mph is roughly half the drag of 70mph. Drag is what the fuel in your car burns to overcome. If your fuel consumption rises at a lower speed, there is something wrong with your car or gear selection.

These variable limits are useless and money grabbing. How many times do you have to reduce speed for literally miles due to debris on road or workers where there aren't any. Its okay to have smart motorways but not having monkeys in the control centre randomly hitting buttons. Went to Gatwick early hours a few weeks back with no traffic whatsoever but low and behold 50mph limit. Its a scam.0

Jolly good.
Any reason why you have chosen a nine month old thread (where the problem has almost certainly long since been done and dusted) to raise a totally irrelevant point?5 -

It's saving you money 🤦♀️Life in the slow lane1 -
50mph instead of 70mph reduces pollution; is quieter; reduces greenhouse gas emissions (assuming you're not in an EV); costs you less; and for a 30 mile journey will take a maximum of 11 minutes longer (in reality, less than that as in both cases you spend some time at lower speeds). So, not a scam, but is rather beneficial!0

It can be confusing when they’re up and down every gantry. It’s like they want to catch you out!
with that and no hard shoulders it’s enough to make me avoid motorways completely.
