    Just some comments.

We decided to replace our perfectly functioning 'standard' (not built in) Bosch WM, for a quiet - inverter model.

Yes, the motor was quieter during wash cycles, but the 'splash splash splash' of the clothes being rotated wasn't any quieter than before.

Also, although the spin cycle noise was less, the spin wasn't as efficient as the previous model (both had the same 1400 spin speed) - clothes came out less dry and more creased than before. (My shirt sleeves come out pleated!)

The moral is: you should be careful what you wish for. You might get an improvement in some aspects but suffer a loss elsewhere.

Or as is often said on MSE - If it's not broke, don't fix it !
  • I have an AEG direct drive washing machine and it is certainly much quieter than anything I’ve had previously. It is pretty much silent when washing but there is still some noise when on a spin cycle. There isn’t a whine that is usually associated with belt driven machines but the difference is still noticeable.

I ordered an AEG prosteam 7000 but cancelled today  . I watched a video of one in operation.. whilst the motor was silent in wash and relatively quiet in spin, the drum and door was not sound insulated (like mine) so the slopping of clothes and intake and drain of water, was loud. kind of put a mockery on the entire unit.
My beko.. you hardly hear clothes moving around, the intake and drain, but the motor is horrific, grinding and whining. It was never good from new but then only£299

    my search continues

My Samsung is super quiet. I had a Bosch which claimed to be the quietest on the market, it wasn’t !
yes i looked at some bosch units, one would imagine they are top dollar being bosch, but it doesn't seem so. also limited in programs flexibility, i prefer to chose .my own temp and spin rather than key the machine decide.
I have a freestanding Bosch - it's 14 years old but even then, the preset programmes could then be tweaked in all respects (temp, spin, extra water, etc) within the maximum limits of that particular programme. So don't assume that you will be bound by the programme settings. Worth checking this aspect out if you are otherwise interested in a Bosch.

    Hi ninjaef.
A possible different solution - set it to 'anti-crease' or whatever it's called, so it carries out the wash, but stops before the rinses. Then let it do the 15 or so minutes of noisy bit when when it doesn't matter - having lunch, a poo, walking t'dawg?

    Hi folks
I purchased a Sharp unit, very quiet in wash , discernable, and ok in spin.

    However

In spin, any speed, the vibrations through the kitchencan be felt and quite harsh beyond 800rpm.

    Now, important to say...

    * that the flooring is wooden joists, house built in 1948, and the kitchen joists were inspected and packed if needed when i moved in.

    * the previous washing machine was noisy and old , worn bearings, and the dryer function didn't work...but it also sent vibrations through the house, again, level so not moving but i got the vibes

    * the new washing machine is perfectly bubble level, doesnt move, but the vibrations seem to be transmitted into the floor and resonate through the kitchen and diner, just like before. Its on a 3inch thick slab of mdf which has been cited on level  screed.

so, is this normal for wooden joists flooring and can anything be done.

i have a 10mm mat from Screwfix. but, when I lay it on the base, and push the machine into the underworktop cabinet space, the feet just pulls the mat to the back (wall) and bunches up so that the machine doesnt go back all the way.

    grr

and with the mat in situ, there's about 5mm top clearance to get the unit in, almost

     impossible

i cant move the 2inch mdf base, its bolted into the floor and i would need to dismantle tye kitchen to get at the bolts

We squirted washing up liquid on the floor, stood the machine in the mat and used the WU liquid as a lubricant that the mat slid over.

    ah ha

I'll give that a go tomorrow.
    didn't think of that.

but with the weight of the machine on the pad, the machine feet will still dig into the mat even though I can move the mat... the machine will still drag the mat, no?
