Hertz refusing to refund deposit (they say they've refunded me)!

I hired a car in Jan 2024, paid a £200 deposit on my credit card.

Returned the car on time, no issues.

But Hertz won't refund the £200 deposit. In fact they say they refunded it in Nov 2023!!! 2 months before I even made my car hire booking.

I've emailed them 2-3 times but it's like speaking to a robot, the replies keep saying they refunded it and to chase it with my credit card company.

Barclaycard agree with me and say the deposit was taken in Jan 2024 and no refund made.

Any idea what I can do as I really could do with my £200!

Thanks

Best to do a chargeback with your card holder.

Did you also hire a car from them last year which would explain a £200 refund in November 2023, causing an employee to confuse the two transactions? Point this out to them if so.

If you are 100% certain that it hasn't been refunded and you paid by credit card, I think I'd tell Barclaycard to process a s75 claim rather than a chargeback.

They can hardly turn you down you as they seem to have confirmed that the amount has not been refunded by Hertz

For my car hire they put a block on the credit card for a certain amount rather than actually take the money, so after a while the pending charge just dropped off.

No. 1st time I've ever hired a car.  In Jan 2024

No, the £200 was taken and I subsequently got a statement for it which I paid whilst dealing with these incompetents at Hertz

    So to be clear.
This £200 is showing on your Bank/Credit card statement as a debit, not just your available balance is down £200?

    Hertz took the payment.

Barclaycard sent me the statement approx 4 weeks later.

I paid the £200 in full by the final date possible.

My balance is now £0 and has been since that payment, so NO refund has been made.

    Will try this chargeback method

As I posted previously, I think I'd go down the s75 route rather than a chargeback(?)

See what @born_again suggests would be the better approach.  (I believe he or she works for a card povider)

And also - just to be 100% clear - you have doublechecked that Hertz didn't pay you £200 in November last year?

(I know that was prior to you hiring the vehicle but if I were you I'd want to satisfy myself that they certainly were talking rubbish rather than just assuming they were.  Somebody at Hertz thinks they've already refunded you £200.  If I were you I'd want to know why they think that)
