Using WiFi calling

I have a Motorola G7 Power, and use 1pMobile.
I set Wi-Fi calling on for the phone, connected to a Wi-Fi source, and made a test message send.
However, this text message was charged by 1pMobile.
Is there another setting on the phone that is necessary to do Wi-Fi calling?

Calls and messages over WiFi using WiFi calling are still charged at your normal rate. They use WiFi to enter your providers system but are then processed like any other call or message so are still charged.

If you are looking for free messages or calls (other than the data cost) then you can use a messenger like WhatsApp

So WiFi calling is not a separate system, but a mixture of internet and your phone supplier.

I've seen posts about WiFi calling being used when there is a weak phone signal - are there any other advantages or times when it should be used?

Indeed. You should look at WiFi calling as just another way of entering your phone providers mobile network.
