Viaplay / Premier Sport took money after cancelling

I took a years subscription with Viaplay in June 2023 then immediately cancelled it so it didn't auto renew this month. About 3 weeks ago, Viaplay switched me over to Premier Sport who have taken them over. Today, Premier Sport took £79 from my bank account for a further years subscription. I immediately contacted them and got the blurb that I can only cancel at the end of the subscription period which is June 2025! I sent them a screen shot of the page from Viaplay showing that my subscription was cancelled and the date it runs to. They don't want to know! I've had no contact from Premier Sport, just an email from Viaplay informing me about the switch. I've contacted my bank who say they can't stop the payment which is pending but can put a claim in after it clears.
So, what options do I have please? I feel what they Premier Sports have done must be illegal especially since I had no notice from them about the payment. Thanks

Isn't it as simple as that?

As above once it debits you can do a chargeback.

Recuring transactions do not have to be notified that they are due.

Odd that you never received notification of change. Do you check spam/junk folder on a regular basis?

Yes, if the bank accepts the claim! Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

Happens all the time with various companies. So long as you have proof of cancellation. This is a no brainer chargeback.
They can't even reject with the proof..

I expect plenty have - perhaps not with this company, but with others - but how does that help you?
  • I have just had the same problem  with Viaplay/ Premier sports.
On June last year I took out a years subscription but forgot all about it as I have never watched it this year.
I had no notification of the subscription payment was due, so could not cancel it in time as they had taken £79 from my account.
I called Premier Sports and got fobbed off and then hung up on.
I have sent two emails to them and like Davejura68 was told they don’t refund.
My beef is, if they had sent me advance warning  ( They had done when I was previously signed up to them) then I could have cancelled.
Normally notification is received when something is due to be renewed, insurance etc, which gives you a chance to continue or cancel.
    This is blatant theft.

    No, it isn't.

Your situation looks very different to the original poster's.  He had cancelled, and has evidence of doing so.  You simply forgot to cancel.

Time to look at the terms and conditions, and to check your spam folder, etc.  They may have done nothing wrong but if they have, it's not theft.

There is no legal requirement for these companies in regard's recuring payments. Only regulated companies have to inform you.

So for future reference. Anything like this as we all have calendars on phone/computer. Is to make a note before renewal is due, so either you can cancel or make sure you have the funds in place to renew.
Also do not think that if your card has been renewed will stop them. Both Visa & Master have card update systems that allow retailer to request new card numbers.

Not theft, as that is depriving you of some thing you own. Here they are giving you a service, even if you do not want it 🤷‍♀️

  • Had same issue. Sent the following email and was advised within 12 hours I was being reimbursed.

  • Hi

I do not accept your response and have been in touch with my bank and the payment (still pending at the time of writing) on my credit card.

They have advised that they cannot act whilst this payment is still ‘pending’ but will do so once it has cleared.

I cancelled this online shortly after taking out the subscription via the Viaplay app to ensure it was a one off payment and that no further charges would be taken.

My online transaction was with Viaplay and not Premier Media.

I no longer have Sky TV so it is of no interest in any case.
