Hastings Direct

Since I sent a cancellation request by email on 31/1/23, Hastings have auto renewed me twice (over £1200) and now only offer a protata return from the time I brought this matter to their attention (so called insurance period from 2/24 to 2/25). I have sent them a copy of my bill of sale for the car and a copy of my emailed cancellation notice.
I have complained to barclaycard fraud services and they are looking into it but this needs to be in the public domain as its getting on for 2 months and hastings will not budge.
Any suggestions?

How do you pay, card or DD?
is this a Yearly or monthly payment?
If monthly you are taking out a loan from them to pay the full amount upfront & then pay the loan back.

Barclays will not do anything as it is not fraud.

What do you mean they have renewed you twice?  All I can understand regarding your insurance is that you cancelled by email on 31/1/23.  When did they renew the policy and why have you waited til now to complain?  I am assuming that you have lodged a complaint with them.

If you haven't it would be much easier to understand if you lay things out in a strict linear fashion.
31/1/23 I emailed you cancelling my policy
X/X/23 you renewed my policy despite me having cancelled it.
Y/Y/23 I emailed again to say I had sold my car as previously mentioned and that there was no permission to renew.
    etc etc

I agree it is not fraud, its their mistake but they are not willing to refund both annual payments. Or it could be fraud if they have knowingly done this, there is no paper work involved, all on line, so may contact BBC girls!

Looking at their website they state you must cancel by telephoning them.

When you received your renewal notice did it list email as a valid mechanism of cancellation? Personally would never use email for such an important communication as you have no way of knowing if its been received and read or if its been blocked by an over sensitive spam filter etc.

On the surface it sounds like you haven't followed the instructions and you've also left it over a year and only now claiming you didnt notice last years renewal, nor this years renewal notice nor this years renewal payment. Given average motor premiums are over £500 most people would spot £1000 missing from their account much quicker.
  • the point is, I have no insurable interest in the vehicle post january 2023. A personal reg was put on the car in Feb 2023 so the actual item insured as specified did not exist.
So they insured nothing, they sent me an email wanting confirmation of my email address!! and I replied saying vehicle sold cancel the insurance so they obviously take writen instruction.
