Will Barclays make the payment in time ?

I am travelling to London to collect a new car and obviously need to make the payment and for the dealer to receive the payment on the same morning. Barclays are increasingly holding larger payments made online/app until the next day and now state this may occur at any time in their terms and conditions.
Should I therefore arrange to attend a Barclays branch in London to transfer the money after viewing the new car at dealer.
"Payments to non-Barclays accounts – where possible, payments to other bank accounts should arrive in 2 hours. However, some payments may not arrive until the end of the following working day. Find out more about Faster Payment "

I would suggest you call the helpline before you make the payment to warn them in advance. that way they can set the system to release the payment without check"You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "1

I think the wording you quote has been in their terms all along and is a standard caveat used by all institutions rather than being symptomatic of payments being held more frequently.STAVROS said:I am travelling to London to collect a new car and obviously need to make the payment and for the dealer to receive the payment on the same morning. In your shoes I think I'd try to pay when at the dealer and take it from there - they'll be familiar with this situation and you can always contact Barclays at the time if there's an issue. Is payment by debit card an option instead of bank transfer?1 -
I contacted Barclays telephone banking and they don't use a large payment marker. So if you are selected by the anti-fraud system then its tough luck. I think this applies to all electronic payment eg debit card, online or app. Fortunately as I will be in London there are Barclays branches nearby and I suppose I could walk in and arrange a Chaps payment with my driving licence as ID ?0

You may be right but I'd expect there to be significantly more scope for fraudulent bank transfers than chip&PIN-verified face-to-face debit card payments, and would expect their anti-fraud algorithms to reflect that and that debit card payments would be more likely to pass through OK, but neither will be 100% reliable.STAVROS said:So if you are selected by the anti-fraud system then its tough luck. Up to you but CHAPS is a same day service rather than an instantaneous one....STAVROS said:Fortunately as I will be in London there are Barclays branches nearby and I suppose I could walk in and arrange a Chaps payment with my driving licence as ID ?1 -
I would definitely be warning them in advance as any large payment to someone new is bound to trigger alarm bells for them. They'll be thinking scam, fraud etc and might freeze the entire account.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. OP already tried that and they don't support pre-warning:Brie said:I would definitely be warning them in advance as any large payment to someone new is bound to trigger alarm bells for them. Hi Brie, Yes freezing the entire account is what I was worried about and no you cannot warn them as I asked if a large payment warning marker could be placed on the account and the phone agent said it couldn't.0

I wonder if a dealer would take one.xylophone said:

I take it that Op has not viewed car & might just walk away if it is not what they want.

Yes, even though it's a completely new car I don't know if it is wise to pay the full price upfront and then risk finding the car has some missing features ( eg because of the chip shortage )born_again said:
