Ipod - NANO or SHUFFLE

Hi All,

Forgive my ignorance here, am wanting to treat myself to an ipod in the sales (secretley hoping it will make my gym visits more enjoyable!) but I dont know the difference between one and the next.

What the best bet? I dont need anything flash but want to be able to choose what plays and when.

Help???

  • without wanting to shout "ipod nano" at you.............GET AN IPOD NANO!!!!

nah, seriously, if you want to choose what you listen to, then a Nano is the way to go. I nearly got a shuffle for gym work but switched to the Nano instead. 4GB holds about 1000 songs, there are a couple of games on it which work fine, its bleeding tiny!!(compared to the old ipods and ipod minis anyway, lol), and you can choose songs by album, artist, playlist, genre, etc., or put it into 'shuffle' mode to get a random selection.

I would advse getting some kind of case for it though, depending on what sport you're gonna be doing (anything where you might be falling over a fair bit, like skating, get a robust hard case, if its just the treadmill and weights, go for something which you can clip to your body or clothes). could always try talking the sales guy into chucking one in for free ;)

also, as far as I've found, the cheapest high street retailer for ipods is Dixons, but their 4GB Nano retails at ((quid, so I might be wrong.

Deffinately the NANO .. Had a shuffle but never liked it the NANO is a lot easier to navigate
  • um, that meant to say Dixons 4Gb Nano selling at 99quid, before the sales.

i think the latest shuffles give you the option of playing music in a random order, or in the order as it appears on the playlst in your computer, but I've never been keen on any mp3 player which doesn't have a screen to scroll through my music.

    Hi OP,

I would def not recommend the shuffle unless you can seriously cope without a screen to see what you are listening to and searching for tracks... with the shuffle its either "random" play or "in order" play...

However have you thought about getting something other than apple?!?!

My parents got my little sis a goodmans 4gb mp3/4 player from Argos for £50 for Christmas... (not back up to £90 unfortunately) http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5136319/Trail/searchtext%3EGOODMANS+MP4.htm

It is tiny - smaller than the Nano and at the £50 it was a lot cheaper plus has a micro SD slot to expand up from 4gb...

    Have fun!

Don't bother with a Shuffle - just got one free from Tesco's - apparently you can only get stuff onto it via iTunes - useless.

Seems like Apple are all design and no function.
  • Sooler - iTunes is a free download from apple.com though. It plays things other than music downloaded from the itunes store (not the same thing as the itunes software, though the two are integrated) - you can play music which you have saved on your computer in various file formats by ripping them from cds or downloading them from non-itunes websites. and for the file formats that itunes doesn't support, there is plenty of encoder freeware which I have used on alubms and that quickly makes them playable on an ipod.

btw, function is an element of design so saying they're all design is actually something of a compliment.....

Sounds like you want a Nano.

The Shuffle is still very good despite what others say. I use mine a lot more than my iPod.

It doesn't have a screen, but you don't need one. It's the size of a small chocolate. You just pick it up and press play. I use it for going to work, jogging etc...

For long journeys though I prefer my iPod. Bigger storage and a screen for selecting what I want. Two different players to be used in two different ways.
