royP_2 said:My BIL died last September leaving a complicated estate and myself and his solicitor as joint executors.
I decided to let the solicitor deal with probate etc as things are rather complicated and thought that he would be able to deal with things far quicker than myself., I still remain as an executor.
Having agreed the above I have passed over all paperwork that I had by the end of September 2023, since then I have heard nothing, should the solicitor keep me updated from time to time?
As far as I'm aware probate has not been applied for yet!
Any thoughts please as I have no idea what the correct procedure should be.
Thanks for any replies.
The fact that you have not been asked to renounce your executorship powers is proof that probate has not even been APPLIED for, as this is part of the required paperwork

I think the next step would either be a formal complaint to the firm, or a letter to the solicitor stating that if you do not hear back then you will make a formal complaint.
It is entirely possible that nothing has been done yet, and he's not reporting that back to you because he'd have to charge you do do so. So a request to know what progress has been made (if any), and an indication of timescale would be what I'd be asking for.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Unfortunately your mistake was to think that using a solicitor would be quicker, but it is probably without exception always a lot slower.1

If the solicitor is actually one of the executors, how does the charging work? Could he/she simply charge the estate whatever they want? Does responding to a fellow executor get charged extra?OP - did you agree any terms prior to the work starting? Is the solicitor working as part of a firm of solicitors who were names as executors or was it one solicitor that was appointed executor by name?0
