Joint Executor.

Options
My BIL died last September leaving a complicated estate and myself and his solicitor as joint executors.
I decided to let the solicitor deal with probate etc as things are rather complicated and thought that he would be able to deal with things far quicker than myself., I still remain as an executor.
Having agreed the above I have passed over all paperwork that I had by the end of September 2023, since then I have heard nothing, should the solicitor keep me updated from time to time?
As far as I'm aware probate has not been applied for yet!
Any thoughts please as I have no idea what the correct procedure should be.

Thanks for any replies.

Unless it's an incredibly simple estate that the executor is very familiar with, that's rarely possible - and the OP suggests that this case is complicated.

In order to apply for probate you need to be confident of the value of the estate - that means establishing all savings, investments, property values, value of expensive goods (jewellery, antiques, cars etc) and finding out if there are debts owed by the deceased. That sort of information gathering can easily take many months.

Assuming we're talking England or Wales, you can determine if probate has been granted,  and if it has get a copy of the will, by lookinghere
Search probate records for documents and wills (England and Wales) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

But if memory serves me correctly (and it may not), if you have not reserved powers, then at some point in the process - at least online - you will be asked to confirm that you approve the application.
