I am so suprised that Ebay still allowing to sell copied dvds..I reported the listings, the person just copying rare films into ordinary disc and selling at high price. After my report, some of the listings were still there. In March another copy of the same film sold by same indivudual at high price. Now another  copy is still there. Listings of the photo shows ordinary disc and film name written manually but Ebay saying they couldnt find any irregularity with that listing. I am amazed  how such a company allows people sell copied discs of rare films continuously.

How old are the films?  Is it possible they are now in the public domain?

If the seller isn't misleading anyone, what's the problem and why do you feel the need to get involved?

Pirating films or music is an offence (assuming it is still in copyright). It might seem a minor issue but for anyone using ebay it can be an issue as if ebay starts getting a reputation for allowing illegal items it may push buyers away. It is inevitable that illegal items will get listed, ebay can't police everything, but where something obvious is reported it seems wrong of ebay to ignore it.

pirating films or music that are out of copyright is not an offence so if they are old films maybe this is why it seems to be allowed

I did involved because I have great collections of dvds .some very rare..When I say rare, not nesseseraly  old but sought after films, hard to find in the market, you can sell them at very good prices..When I was looking for a particular title,  those recorded ordinary discs came up..You cant deceive buyers charching extortinate price just for copied ordinary discs.
I checked that sellers shop, what is selling..so many discs copied and listed..
Ebay removed them from their site..
    2 left still listed..

Thanks to this platform, I learned that, they are not removed as being public domain films.

So Ebay 1is not at fault..they removed those copied 20 dvds after my report and left 2. public domain films..

    My Sincere Apology to Ebay..

It's a complex area and the laws do vary between countries. In theoretical terms in the UK Films are copyrighted for 70 years after the last death of the writer, director, author or from the date of first release if the identity of these people are unknown however in practice copyright is often bought by a firm rather than being retained by these persons and this only applies for works created in the UK, if it originated from outside the UK we generally mirror the rules of the country of origin.

The US now is also 70 years after death but only since 1978, previously it was 95 years from publication hence we now have Winnie the Pooh out of copyright and last year the terrible Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey was released to "celebrate" it.  The same people are planning similar slasher horror films for Bambi, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty etc as they all come into the public domain soon.

You get similar things with Patents etc which is why for years you could only buy Nespresso capsules from Nestle but their patent expired and there are is now an explosion of "compatible" options on the market from high end independent coffee companies, supermarkets and budget sellers.

There are some exceptions though, Peter Pan will never come out of copyright in the UK as the author gifted the rights to Great Ormond Street Hospital on their death and the government passed legislation to extend it perpetually

You shouldn’t be! eBay have earned a significant income over the last 2 decades plus from the sale of counterfeit media.

Have a look at the King of the Hill complete series listings and follow the trail.

A lot of stuff listed as public domain isn’t in the public domain.

Sadly most of the studios weren’t interested in protecting their copyright when media sales were at their peak, very unlikely they care at all these days.

  • I reported numerous listing of fake stamps to eBay at a time and they did nothing with those either.
