Air heat pumps

matelodave said: There are plenty of people on these forums who have heatpumps and are more than satisfied with them and even more who havent got one but know how bad they think they are.I needed to replace an old gas boiler last year. Had a couple of heating engineers tell me that a heat pump wouldn't work (along with other BS that was easy to pick holes in). If I were to replace the boiler now, the increase in grant along with the relaxation of insulation requirements, I may well have gone for an ASHP.Had a quote from Octopus which was only a few quid more than I paid for a gas boiler. Being able to get rid of the gas meter, the reduction in standing charges would offset any increase in running costs. And looking at the sCOP figures, I believe it would be cheaper to run for much of the year.

Octopus's latest heat pump runs "hot" so avoiding most of the problems when retro-fitting on to an existing system and not needing to be constantly rumbling away in the background, alas yet to start installing in my area or I might have gone for it. I only run the gas in the winter months for an hour or two a day, don't use hot water, and with the cheap rates for heat pumps twice a day that would work well for me even with a COP of only 3 (half price electricity divided by three is less than gas).0

So far (early days), over the last week, my Heat Pump (Daikin Altherma 3 Monobloc) is using 2kWh at 7.5p/kWh per night to heat the hot water tank and an additional 3kWh at 7.5p/kWh on a Friday for the disinfection cycle.
I make that £2.85 per week for hot water. The hot water has been sufficient for our needs. At first, it was set to "Schedule & Reheat", where it would top up the temperature as you use it. However, I have set this to "Schedule" only to see if that works out cheaper, and it seems to work okay for us.
The heating has not yet kicked in as the thermostat is set to 20 degrees during the day and 16 degrees overnight and the temperature has not dropped below this yet, so I do not know how much this will use yet.1
