Hyperoptic vs Community Fibre

Hi Everyone,

My broadband and telephone deal are up for renewal in the next few days, so I really need to get a move on, on sorting this (I'm a part time student so have been finishing my studies). I'm currently with Hyperoptic where I pay £22pm. I was given the option of committing to them for another 24 months at £27 or go onto a rolling contract for £38. Community Fibre offer a similar deal again for 24 months.

Neither of these are completely ideal as I'll be moving in with my partner in the next few months.

Whilst I currently have a mortgage on my flat, I'll be renting it out when I do move, but I don't know whether the cost of the broadband can be factored in onto the rent or classed as an expense or whether to just deal with the termination fees when I move and let the tenant decide for themselves.

As the move isn't happening just yet, I still need internet etc to perform my job whilst at home.

Any suggestions as to what I should do. I've spoken to Hyperoptic, but insist I can only get the £27 with no phone for 12 months and that if I commit to 24 months, when I do move I'll have to pay the rest of the contract regardless of if it's 12 or 24.

  • use city fibre you'll get symmetrical (upload/download same speed) broadband, when others do 1:10 ratio.

Most if not all of the AltNets offer symmetric speeds, including Hyperoptic. But if upload speed isn't important to the OP, then its irrelevant.

OP - You could look at using a 4G/5G service as an interim, if you get good enough coverage from one of the mobile networks.

Despite where I live, 4G/5G isn't really an option as I have to take phone calls as part of my job and the applications I need to perform my role are bandwidth heavy. I've tried using 4G/ 5G when I had an internet outage last year and it was an absolute nightmare. I do like your thinking and idea as that didn't occur to me!

Are you able to get both? Thought in most cases the provider had done a deal with the freeholder and prevents the others from connecting. The last two places we've had were Hyperoptic and whilst Community is in the area they won't connect up the addresses.

You can include broadband in the rental agreement if you want but it doesn't guarantee you'll get an extra £27 per month in rent -v- one without internet included.

A rolling contract seems the most sensible if you are sure you'll be moving out within a couple of months

As stated ,  it’s really a no brainier, move onto the rolling 30 day to quit ‘contract’ , sure it’s a few ££ more a month ( £11 ) but even if it’s 6 months before you quit , its  hardly a huge sum , it’s the least hassle and will almost certainly be less than 18 months of ETC , which would be due by taking a 24 month minimum term , and then quitting a 1/4 of the way through that minimum term
