Everyone will have their own opinion on this. For some car-mad people a cherished plate is an ideal special birthday present, which can be kept for the rest of their lives, then passed on to a member of the family, and as prices start at £250, its not behond the means of some families to club together for a special occasion.

My personal number plate cost 399.99 from DVLA 3.5 years ago & I frequently have enquiries from interested parties with the current highest offer being 1850.00 In my case it was very much worth it.

The retention fee is £25.00 per year but you only pay this when it's on paper. If it sits on a car you pay nothing!!

I hate to be a real killjoy in this matter, but the name of this website is “Money Saving Expert”. Now let’s be honest with ourselves here – are private (cherished – call them what you will) registration marks really a necessity? I’m sorry, but I really get a bee in my bonnet regarding this ostentatious rubbish. Apologies if this offends anyone, It’s just my personal opinion.

Where does it say? in the rules of this site that money saving advice etc must only be sought if the product is a necessity. The OP is legimately asking for advice about a present for her father, and whilst you might not like personalised number plates some people must, other wise the DVLA, and others wouldnt be able to sell them, and make a good income from them. ;)

I wanted my number plate to be slightly different but couldnt afford a personalized one because i seem to be getting poorer and poorer each month despite working

So i had my number plate changed slightly and got a pink/purple border and my name written at the bottom. Only cost £20 for both:D And all above board....as far as i know!

Either ring a few of the registration Mark Dealers advertised in places such as the Autotrader & Echange & Mart, and see if there is much of a variation in price they offer you.

You could always try and advertise yourself, in local papers or ebay, because the Reg Mark Companies will take their cut from the sale.

I think if you looked at the Travel Board, some members will have saved for a 'holiday of a life time'-could these holidays be a necessity?? No, but its what each individual classes as an extravegance, and the basis of this site is to enjoy yourself, in whichever way suits you, and save money along the way.

Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
    Are thinking of you today.
