I have found a car with a reg plate which I would like to buy . The owner is willing to sell either the car or the registration . My Question
It is a J reg and someone has told me the reg may or may not be transferrable . Apparently the log book gives details .The present owner and I are unaware of procedures etc . Any help would be much appreciated .
Thanks

You cannot display a registration number that is younger than the vehicle - ie a P reg on a K reg car.0

I have a private number plate and you need to be aware that when you buy a new car it is a nightmare changing it over. Technically you should retain the original plate (at a cost of course) because DVLA are the most unhelpful department in the country. You can very rarely speak to a person so you go to the office and wait and wait and then they mess you about and finally if they don't want to inspect either vehicle (which they can do randomly and is a problem if you've already sold the car) They will tell you not to sell the car with your plate on it until they issue another number which is a minimum of 10 days. It's all a headache and of course they are exceptionally helpful when you first buy the plate so you won't know any of this until resale!
setting all of that aside i would still have bought one i just wish i had known the process involved first.
Hope this hasn't put you off!Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right. :rolleyes:0 -
It will state on the notes section of the Registration Certificate (V5) if the mark is non-transferable.
As long as the cherished transfer application is in order, and accompanied by all the correct documentation and payment, I would post the application to your nearest DVLA Local Office (40 of these in the country). If the vehicle needs inspecting they will write, or ring you with an appointment, the whole transaction may take 3 to 5 days, depending on which office you use, and the time of the month. The application form you are signing states that the car must not be sold until the transaction is completed, although generally people sell the donor vehicle once they have a replacemnet registration mark, before they receive a new Log Book.:j0 -
try https://www.newreg.co.uk or https://www.regtranfers.co.uk
i have bought two personal plates and they are great.also go on the autotrader website and log on from there top personal number plates.
in theory your plate can not make the car look newer than it is....so the newer the car the wider choice of number plates available to you.
good luck0 -
The price you see on the DVLA website is the price you pay.
With some of the companies advertising in places like the Autotrader, you pay VAT and the £80 transfer fee on top of the price-this is stated in the small print!:j0 -

This is my experience also....(unfortunately)
I bought a personalised plate for my husband's birthday several years ago from the DVLA. It wasn't made clear to me at the time that if you ever want to stop using the plate but still retain ownership of the number, you have to pay a hefty fee each year you are not using it on a car. And if you DO transfer the number to another car, that costs about £80 & delays the purchase of the new car. So on top of the initial cost of the plate, every time you change the car you have to shell out more money whether you're going to use the reg or not.
Personally, I wish I hadn't bothered buying it, but hubby loves it so I guess that's all that matters really.0 -
I hate to be a real killjoy in this matter, but the name of this website is “Money Saving Expert”. Now let’s be honest with ourselves here – are private (cherished – call them what you will) registration marks really a necessity? I’m sorry, but I really get a bee in my bonnet regarding this ostentatious rubbish. Apologies if this offends anyone, It’s just my personal opinion.
