Personally I'd go to www.dmxdimension.com to find the best deal currently available for Dells. So long as you're not after agames machine £500 will buy a great system that will last you for several years.
Have a look at the Inspiron 530, 530s and 531 models and also the Vostros.
For less than £500 you can get a system with a 500Gb hard drive, 2Gb RAM, a Core 2 Duo processor and Vista Business
