Upgrading

Hi all,
From my question you will see that I have NO technical knowledge.

At the moment I have Windows 98 on a Packard Bell PC. but I would like to upgrade my PC.

How do I do this??!!!

Do I need to go and buy a whole new system? i.e new tower/modum, new screen and keyboard?

Or what exactly.?
Also how do I transfer all the information on my computer to the new one?

I have read the "Back up " thread but as you can imagine , I would not be capable of doing this.

Help please all you knowledgable out there.!!! Thanks for your replies.

assuming its a very old puter, then say 200/300 quid will get you a base unit. should be able to use your old mouse/screen/KB.
do you have a cdrw drive? if so then back up all your personal data onto cd,s first.

or keep the old HDD, as second hdd, (with your data) and give away the rest.
    Get some gorm.

if its running windows 98 then its so old there will be nothing in it worth keeping, even the case will be propritory.

on the plus side £900 is a massive ammount to spend on a pc these days, £500 will get you a 17" laptop thats more powerfull than your current rig by a factor of 100's

With the £900 budget I would ask the question "What do I want to do with this machine now and will I want to upgrade it in the future?"

Even the keyboards are only a few quid, so I would replace this. I would treat myself to a new TFT monitor and get a nice wireless mouse.

In short, get yourself a new system and give the old one away via freecycle. I have just found a Win98SE laptop on freecycle that is going to a tenant of ours. He has nothing and we think this will get him on BB, especially after it gets the win 2k treatment

  • If you have been living with that PC, then I wouldn't blow £900 on a new one, £300 or so will get you a much better pc than you have, and a usb hard disk caddy to stick the old disk in and transfer your files

Thanks for all the replies and good advice.

I think my limit is going to be £500 and with the sales on I should find something good! My Windows 98 is really on its last legs but has served me well.

Just dont walk into a shop and tell them that you want to spend up to £500 as they will fill that amount very easy.

Look around on the web and decide what you want from your new pc main get some prices and shop around. As mentioned you will be able to get something for less than £300, including monitor, which I am sure will do all your Win98 machine will do.

    Good Luck
