Grrrrrrrrrr  Mr tru bought some bread and crisps the other day, I asked him for the receipt, he didn't have one. So I asked him how much he spent, he couldn't remember. He DID remember which shop he'd been into  so I checked the prices and added it to my 'what's been spent' total. So far, so good.

BUT I was ill yesterday so he went shopping on his own last night. Can't find the receipt, can't remember exactly how much he spent and I can't check prices online because he came home with 6 carrier bags of stuff and put it all away so I'm not sure what's new and what we already had

would he remember how many notes he handed over at the checkout tru? That might give you a rough idea!
This thread has got so long! I will try & read all of posts over the weekend but its great that so many people are tackling their grocery budget :T
I'm really pleased with how the last week has gone :) Have been using up all the leftovers from xmas to make meals, froze alot of the meat & have been making meals with that.
My breadmaker that I had for xmas has been a real success & has already saved me money. Have been trying out lots of recipes from the book that came with it.
We have run out of milk today though & I may pop to Julian Graves to see what bargains they have so will update my total later :)

Our sons have a tradition of 'Friday night DVD and nibbles' ... a ploy originally started to get them to go to their room and give us peace on a Friday evening. Fortunately the budget managed to grant them 50p each for some sweeties and DH decided to get a small loaf to save me from baking last night (it's ages since I made bread but we have used up all the loaves from the freezer). My little boys were begging for fish and chips and even offered to fund it with their Christmas money (bless!) but were equally excited with some cut-price spring rolls from the freezer and I knocked up a tasty fish pie for the grown ups.

I shall need to get some things in today but I've confirmed to DH/DS that they will get their farm shop sausage for breakfast tomorrow, so they are happy bunnies. DH's heart sinks every time he opens the fridge but as someone said 'we've got ingredients' and I'm pushing myself to make the meals using ingedients that I used to avoid using after a long day.

    Roll on Week 2!

Thanks for all your tips and inspiration. I feel that I've come a long way in a week!

    Well done Scotrae
You have come a long way in a week. It is really addictive this grocery challenge and you will find that you amaze yourself along the way with just how inventive you can be. Try not to make it too difficult for youself in the beginning though.
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.
  • Well just off to Lidl for first shop of the year, have menu plan and list in hand Wish me luck:j let you know how I get on later x

do you have any info you could share on this? I have been vaguely browsing through the forums but not seen anything which tells me exactly what to do when. Im a total novice!

I'm fairly new to it too - grew lots indoors last year but have a bit of garden now so trying a few things out for the first time! There seems to be quite a few websites with lists of what to do when - for example http://www.allotment.org.uk/garden_month.php has a monthly guide. Good luck!
