I always say before they make me walk through the scanner that I have a TKR and they wave their wand at me.  Sometimes they get me to walk through the scanner first and then do it which is the only time it gets slower.  I've never carried a letter with me but should they ask I could always drop my trousers and show them the honking big scar from the op.  The only thing I've lost off the conveyor belt was a silk scarf that they had me take off (why?) and I think the only reason I lost it was I was distracted by the person behind me who was carrying their cat.  Not something you see most times you are going through security!!

My husband has a pacemaker so can’t use the scanners.  He has to be manually  checked.  It does take a bit longer so I always precede him and grab his stuff while the search is underway.

Interesting thread as I thought that replacement joints would pick up on X-rays but not worry a security screens.

Must be different experiences for different people as I've got lots of metal and screws in my leg but never set off the airport scanners.
When I got them I asked the doctor for a letter or something and he said they would be so easy to fake that they don't issue them and I had to rely on security doing what was required.

The vast majority of metal work in people nowdays, myself included, are made of titanium which wont be pinged by a metal detector.

For ref i go thru a metal detector daily at an airport and never ping despite the metal work in my shoulder
