    Thanks,
I'm glad there was not some obvious, glaring difference between the two that I had missed.
I have now ordered the G13 and off to collect :)
The Argos website says it does have NFC, though I don't think my old G7 Power had that so unimportant either way.  Nice to have I suppose - I might find a use for it ?

The old phone seems to have taken up a consistent semi-stable state so I am optimistic that I will be able to get it operating sufficiently for data recovery and then get rid.
NFC is necessary if you use Google Pay.

You can also put all your loyalty cards on it Tesco Asda B&Q etc makes them easy to find

My phone has now eventually run the battery down to zero, so plugged in to fully recharge and then I will be able to try (hope) to get it operating in a stable mode that allows data transfer in the normal fashion.
Surprised it took from Saturday to Thursday to exhaust the battery.

I continue to struggle to recover data from the old phone  :(

As of Tuesday this week, the screen has developed a fault (flickering) on the new phone so, next weekend (I can't get there before) I will need to return it to Argos and hope the customer service has a process to provide a good remedy for a faulty device.  I know Argos are good when simply returning an unused purchase in their returns period but I have never had to return a faulty device outwith that process.

If I end up with the situation of needing to pay for a new phone, I have found the side-mounted (power-button) finger print ID fairly poor compared to the previous rear mounted type.  It would be enough to put me off the same (MOTO G-Series) again.  However, I have not been able to identify similar budget phones with long battery life and good finger print recognition.  In part, most phone specs simply say that a phone has (or does not have) finger print recognition, rather than the specifics of the type of finger print recognition.  Does anyone have any ideas?

    Two bits of good news.

First, the old G7 is now stable.  It has to have no SIM card and no SD card and WIFI on but then seems to function.  This will allow me to transfer data across and clear the old phone before disposal.  The least obvious thing seems to be WHATSAPP.  (EDIT - good news - I found how to do this https://faq.whatsapp.com/209942271778103/?cms_platform=android)

Second, I took the faulty new phone to Argos and they exchanged it without any bother at all - I was really impressed by the customer service.  I could have then tried to return the new phone for a refund and bought again as the current price is £10 cheaper, but that really did seem like a lot of faff and there was no reason for me to be awkward given how good the service had been.

The replacement new phone is now on charge so I can configure later this evening.

In the longer term, I will be looking to find a phone that has a better form of biometrics than the side / power button finger print sensor.  Happy for suggestions from the forum...
