Unrequested change to notification preferences

Options
I have just received an email notifying me of my username being mentioned by another poster, but have only ever set my notification preferences to use the internal notification process within the forum, rather than emailing out.

I went into the preferences (for the first time in many months) to find that the setting for email notification had been ticked, which was certainly not by me - I've unticked it again, but wonder why it had reset without my consent or knowledge?

Just me, or has anyone else seen this?

Same thing happened to me. I unsubscribed the first time but it happened again. I've never subscribed to notifications.

    Hi

I’m going to check if a change on Friday could have changed the default notification settings.

The way the system is designed to work is that all members start on the default notification settings.
But. If they indicate any preference at any time (simply by going to Notification Preferences and making any change) then they have taken complete control of their notifications and from then on only they are able to make any changes. Nothing we can do can change them.

@eskbanker  is it possible that you have never made a change to the notification settings in the past?

If you have expressed any notification preference - just by making a change to that page - in theory, no change in notification setting should ever be able to effect you.

I'm pretty sure I've made changes before, to receive fewer notifications than the default, and had certainly disabled any email notifications relating to routine day-to-day stuff like new replies on threads, which were the ones that I found newly ticked on Friday.

    Hi again

We don't currently default members into those kind of emails. While there may have been changes in the past, the main one we currently default members into is "Rank" change - and that's so that they get a helpful email when they change from 'Newbie' to 'Forumite', so you probably wouldn't have had to make changes in the past unless you wanted more emails.

I must admit that I can't be 100% sure about previous changes, but am fairly confident that I did make some adjustments.

I know I checked that I wouldn't be receiving them but cannot remember if that was the default at the time or not. Got a few emails for the first time over the weekend too.

Hi @DullGreyGuy Could you tell us when the last day and time you got an unwanted notification?
