I have always said to my children who back in the day were usually skint, if they do nothing else change the oil and filters.

Your engine will benefit from an oil and filter change once a year or every 10-12 thousand miles along with an air filter.
Most cars these days are fitted with modern Iridium sparkplugs which tend to last three times as long than the older cooper core style sparkplugs.
At this age I would check the condition and gaps every couple of years and replace if the gaps are getting too wide or the white insulation was cracking.
As the car is now ten years old, I wouldn't skip of the rest of the servicing tasks.
A normal service will involve lots of checks and measurements like the condition of the suspension, tyre thread depth, brake thickness and so on.
These should flag up any problems and help you time further maintenance.
Old coolant in the engine tends fall out of the water it's mixed with over time and can start causing internal issues with corrosion and furring up the passageways, so that needs changing every couple of years.
Brake fluid attracts water which then causes internals parts to rust.
Changing these every three or four years is cheap enough and will save money in the long run.
Your timing belt needs replacement at certain intervals and it's usual to replace the water pump at the same time as it's sometimes ran off the same belt, but I believe the UP/Citigo/Mi's water pump runs off the camshaft at the other end of the engine with it's own small belt, which will also need replacing, if it lets go you'll cook the engine.
Water pumps tend to weep when they get older. They are designed to weep as a warning the bearing is getting worn so you might find a bit of coolant staining under it, so worth a check at least once a year.
When it's having a cambelt/water pump, it's a good idea to replace the aux belt at the same time, it costs peanuts.
It's not uncommon at this sort of mileage (100,000+) to consider replacing the O2 sensors.
It's this sensor (the pre cat one) that effectively trims the fuel ratio injected into the engine and over time O2 will get contaminated with ash, sulphur etc making it less effective and the engine dirtier and less economical.
I'm not saying do them all at once, but tackle one or two of the bigger items every year along with the oil and filter changes and check the rest of the car. It'll keep it running far longer.0 -
use quality oil to vehicle spec, and good filters diesels i do every 10,000 miles
cambelts vary but all have a mileage AND age limit (VW diesels 100k miles or 5 years whichever comes first, a new engine is £10,000 fitted inc vat)Now we all know how it felt to play in the band on the Titanic...0
