Vinted asking for NI numbers

The various Vinted groups are full of people mentioning this - but Vinted have now started contacting sellers asking them for their NI numbers ready for the new reporting system.

I do find the Vinted groups really frustrating though, no one ever searches for a thread, so you end up with literally 25 threads one after another all asking if anyone has had their NI number requested- depending on who responds people are being told it's a) a scam b) illegal or C) as something that needs to be done.

The ebay NI thread incidentally is here

Yes, they are now required to report to HMRC sellers over certain volumes and values.

Will be much easier for Vinted to aggregate when some sellers may have multiple accounts if they have a single immutable thing like NINo and similarly easier for HMRC to know who the data relates to. Without it you are potentially trying to match people with inconsistence use of full name and diminutive, married and maiden name etc etc.

I hadn't thought of the multiple account scenario as I was really busy concentrating on ebay forums and not Vinted (which I find irritating)

On ebay the multiple accounts doesn't matter as their T and Cs allow it, on Vinted it is strictly one account per person- so may well catch some people out.

It looks like another batch of accounts have had NI numbers requested as I've seen a few mentions now on the various facebook groups  I found a request on my Vinted account in my profile explaining about the HMRC requirements and showing me what they were going to declare to HMRC. It then asked me to add my NI number, and once I did that I got the 'thank you, you can now continue selling on Vinted' message. However, I hadn't received any specific message about it, I just happened to stumble across the bit in my profile when I was making checks that all was well.

As far as I can see ebay haven't requested my NI number yet on any of my accounts, business or private. See this thread for ebay updates.
