The fact that Smart Save is a Barclays client who uses one of their accounts as an intermediary for funding their products doesn't mean that Barclays will be able to discuss it with you, and there's no particular reason for Barclays staff to have heard of Smart Save.
The fraud team hadn't heard of any of the names they go by. They advised possible scam.
As above, there's no reason for them to have heard of every destination that customers will legitimately send money to, although the fact that funds are routed via an intermediary, thereby failing the Confirmation of Payee check, is a generic red flag, which perhaps explains a standard boilerplate opinion that this signifies a potential scam.
The only reason to continue was their inclusion on this website. I trust the people compiling these best buys are checking the facts before releasing them to the website.

i wasn't left with any option since the banking website would not work.
Did the online payment actually fail/error or was it just stopped by the fraud team ? Note the important bit about using the correct reference number in Smartsave's deposit instructions...

Follow the steps below to add money to your SmartSave account.

    1. Log in to your SmartSave account and make a note of our payment details i.e. Payee name, sort code, account number and reference

    2. Go to the nominated current account you've chosen to transfer money from - you can do this online, on the phone or in branch depending on your bank

    3. Use the details from step 1, above, to make the transfer. It's important to use your unique reference number e.g. SMRTD0000 or we won't be able to accept your deposit

due to the incorrect ref number Barclays used it failed. I'll try again tomorrow, you know what they say, three days online, four phone calls & trip into branch is a charm.

Not sure which facts you expect MSE to check - they'll perhaps verify that the product exists, is available, and that it's covered by FSCS protection, but are unlikely to pay any attention to details such as whether or not funding is via an intermediary.  Many savings providers do this, especially smaller players with better rates, so in itself it's not particularly noteworthy....
