If you go through the likes of Quidco etc they often have additional discounts & cashback with the compare companies. I got £45 cashback on my insurance of £240.

The survey would normally state the rebuild cost. Much more sensible to use that figure plus a modest margin than any random online tool that has never seen the building and is highly subject to the OP correctly categorising it.

OP, the figure you quoted is high if it's just for buildings all other things being equally. We pay about £600pa for buildings and contents in a 3 bed mid terraced, and we had subsidence in 2010 which is still adding a bit of a premium. Worth checking on the comparison sites.

In terms of contents insurance, you need to think of all the contents, not just the stuff that might get pinched if you are burgled. If the house goes up in flames, everything like curtains, flooring/carpets, white goods etc. won't be replaced by your buildings insurance. Even a fire in the kitchen can cost £1,000's to fix up. The fitted kitchen would be covered. I'd get it, and try and get an accurate cover - if you under cover, then you might get nothing in the event of a claim e.g. you have £30k cover, have a fire and claim £10k loss, they assess that there is £28k of covered assets left in the house, you only get £2k. If you have any individual items of value, check whether they need specifically mentioning.

It's worth just going round each room and making a fair guestimate of replacement cost. (Buildings Insurance will cover the cost to rebuild, repair or replace things like your roof, walls, windows, doors or fitted bathrooms and kitchens so ignore them)

I pay about £30 per month for contents insurance but we've got quite a high value on our belongings with about half a dozen high value items named specifically in the policy. We're a military family who move often so our insurance also includes cover during moves. I'm sure I could find a cheaper policy and will when I move into a house I've purchased later this year, but for now it does it's job. The policy also covers belongings away from home which is useful for people travelling with work or short UK based trips to visit family, etc where travel insurance isn't needed. Eg it would cover the replacement of a laptop if one was broken while staying with my parents.
