Cancelling new car

Hi, my partner ordered a new car just over three weeks ago. She paid a £500 deposit and has signed the order form. The car has arrived at the dealership ready for collection. We have since found out that she is entitled to a teacher discount and this works out at £6150 off the price. Does anyone know where we stand in terms of cancelling, will She be liable to pay for the credit agreement or could we lose the deposit and walk away as we have not yet took delivery of the car?

Yes she should have known about this discount but she didnt. We only went to test drive a car and before we knew it the dealer had blagged her to order. hard one to swallow when its £6k.

Thanks

Did she go into the dealership to buy it or test drive it or something? Or was it all done remotely?

Assuming it was in person you have no statutory right of cancellation and so it comes down to the T&Cs of the contract. If the car is ready for collection its almost certainly been registered to you and so now is a "nearly new" car and so costs are going to be involved beyond the deposit

You would need to check the paperwork but suspect it might be more than £500 that you are liable.
Always "go away and think about it" when there occasions like this

yes we test drove one they were advertising as ex demo but the salesman convinced us to order a new one as it would be here much sooner than the ex demo would be ready to go. they have also advertised an extra £750 off new cars starting from thursday so thats also a kick in the nads. all of a sudden new car day is turning sour.

As an in person sale you have no statutory right of cancellation so it comes down to the terms in the contract you agreed to and your negotiation skills.

Unfortunately prices change over time and often going downward for things that are refreshed/redesigned every couple of years. Generally better to stop looking after you lock into a price otherwise you'll constantly be thinking of what it might go to next week if you just hold out a bit longer.

You can always go into the dealer and ask how much it'll cost you to walk away from the deal, and ask what it'd take for you to be transferred over to the teacher discount.

Worst case is you're still paying the contracted figure and learned an expensive lesson.

As above, can you see if they'll redo the deal with the teacher discount applied and do some fettling on the overall cost?

I presume the teacher discount would have been available through some other company? ie not the garage you went to - guess the salesman will lose commission?

Check that discount again. Seems to be very high. Do you use a car price site like drive the deal etc

That discount (if correct) will be off list price. Please don't say you paid list price from the dealer?

What was the list price of the car?
How much is your purchase agreed at?
How much is the difference between your agreed purchase price and the list price less "teacher discount"?
