My initial feeling was that it was a scam and looking up their number - 0345 882 8121 - it says this number is most commonly associated with scams.
Most of the online phone number look-ups say that about most phone numbers. Don't forget that anyone can put those comments on and "rate" the phone number, and that to many people "unwanted phone call" or "unexpected phone call" is the same as "scam". I had a call from British Gas which was totally legitimate, but the number appears listed as "likely to be a scam".

    1. When the caller hangs up quickly as soon as you pick up the receiver  or does not say anything for some time then it is mostly likely to be a scam call.

    2. I have had callers introducing themselves as being from different companies but when I start to question them, they hang up. Those are scam calls.

    3. What steps did you take to confirm it was British Gas who called.

    4. Did they the caller introduce themselves as British Gas? Was it press button 1, etc.

I have also just received a letter from Phoenix Life regarding my being the next of kin of one of their policy holders who, in a recent update of their systems they learned had died. It was indeed my mum who died over 10 years ago.  My initial feeling was that it was a scam and looking up their number - 0345 882 8121 - it says this number is most commonly associated with scams.  My mum was fairly diligent with her paperwork and told us where everything was so i can't imagine there is anything left to claim but I suppose a scam would rely on the fact that you would want to know for sure!
Over the years Phoenix Life have taken over many of the older long standing institutions, so it is possible that your mum may have held a policy with one of the legacy companies.

To give you some idea of the household names, now under their umbrella click on this link to their website.

    https://www.phoenixlife.co.uk/

Then choose Customer Centre / Manage my Policy.

This will open a drop down box where you can see all the old policy provider names that they now control.
Do you have any records of your mum having a policy with any of them?

Just thought I would mention it as it may help.

If it is a pension, you can also use the Pension Tracing Service

If that was in response to my post, the call was to book a boiler service. I knew it was definitely British Gas because they came and serviced the boiler at the time we agreed, they had the sign-written van and everything. I don't remember the details of the call. I can generally recognise a dodgy call, as you say a long silence suggests that it's an auto-dialler waiting for one of their staff to notice that a number has been answered.

My point was that just because a web site says a phone number is a scam number, doesn't mean it is a scam number. And just because a web site says a phone number is a legitimate number, doesn't mean it is a legitimate number. Don't forget how easy it is for unscrupulous people to fake the caller ID.
