I opened a joint account with FD in 2011 which I closed in 2023 (didn't get a switching bonus for this). After reading the T&C's I believe I am ineligible for this offer, is that correct?
    Yes according to the T&Cs

Not having had a HSBC account open since 2018, which is now SIX years ago is absolutely ridiculous. Not having received a switch offer maybe, but a six year timeframe is a joke.
Yeah it was the first thing I scrolled to in case HSBC do it too, I switched in Feb 22 so I wasn't expecting something this year but 2028 until I could potentially get an HSBC one if they do it is crazy!

They're clearly not aiming at serial switchers so for the average account customer it won't be a problem as most people don't want to switch to the same bank more than once.
Oh I agree with the motivation - but it's still a huge time frame. I switched in Feb 22 and still have the account / regular saver - an HSBC switch being blocked to potentially 2028 when I could reasonably benefit from a switch to their parent company

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • I have signed up,

However a few months ago signed up to an Australian HSBC account and I am just hoping this doesn't count as a HSBC account.. The debit card came from Australia and all post does so.. Like to think it may not link..

HSBC UK is a completely separate entity within HSBC Group. You'll be fine, I'm quite sure.

If I open open a single/solo First Direct account, can I transfer a joint account with my old bank ?

No. Some providers will allow you to CASS soles in to joints but joints cannot be CASS'ed in to soles.

You can ask your old bank to remove one of the joint account holders, thus making it a sole, then CASS to a sole.
  • Can anyone tell me what the 'account opened' date is for a first direct account? Is it when you first apply, when you set up your account login or when you actually make a switch or payment in?
