Have I made a mistake getting an inheritance tax code in advance?

I recently sent in the completed INT400 along with many schedules. But a few weeks before I applied for an inheritance tax reference number, because I thought that’s what you did. Now a friend has told me that’s only for people who have inheritance tax to pay, and I’ve messed up.
I did put a note in with the submission outlining this when I posted all the paperwork off. Have I messed up? What is likely to happen as a result?

It is only required if you have IHT to pay, but you have not messed up and it won’t affect the application.
