Single person discount? Why?Rubyroobs said:Single person occupancy discount for council tax and possibly further council tax support.
If in ESA support group then she should look at claiming Universal credit.
Bereavement support payments if husband worked and paid NI contributions during his lifetime ( I think he does not need to have worked for many weeks ).0 -
Council tax won't be reduced, adult child still living at home, so still two adults.Rubyroobs said:Single person occupancy discount for council tax and possibly further council tax support.

Thank you all for the helpful comments. Update, R should be able to get the bereavement money. She's also uncovered a letter about his pension he was paying at work. Despite being above pension age, and claiming his state pension, her husband was still working until five weeks ago, when he was taken ill. She will look into that this week. Not sure if it will pay out to her.
Adult child still living at home is paying his way. Probably paid more to the running costs of the house over the years than R's late husband! Cremation etc, being organized. Two other adult children too, she is being well taken care of.
Thank you all again, hugs, mumtoomany.xxxFrugal Living Challenge 2026.

Himumtoomany said:Hi, as stated in the title. R, female, was married for several decades. Her husband, sadly, died a couple of days ago. She is off work, having been dismissed while recovering from an operation, (Now looking at unfair dismissal, but that's a different story!) and is receiving ESA. Can anyone tell me, and thus her, what she is entitled to claim, and how to go about this please? Husband left almost no money, had no insurance. He was 66. Thank, mumtoomany.xx
First of all sorry for your loss
As others suggested put the personals details into a benefits calculator
entitled to.co.uk
turn2us.org.uk
Depends on so many things. Is she renting, can she work, has she inherited her late husband's private pension ? etc etc
