Paypal Friends and family payment - how to claim this back

In light of this - it's therefore better to pay via Bank Transfer rather than PayPal F&F?
That's assuming standard PayPal is out of the equation......0 -
Neither give you any protection, but at least getting a 'no' from your bank will be quicker than from Paypal.GadgetGuru said:In light of this - it's therefore better to pay via Bank Transfer rather than PayPal F&F?

Too many accounts/users in the chain? Was the OP a victim or the family member?
The family member purchased something and the OP claimed it back from their account?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
AF are rather toothless, they basically just take reports. If you want any form of crime number then you would need the police to get involved. The banks though are not responsible for getting money from criminals where the money was sent William fly.prowla said:soolin said:
According to the OP a claim via their bank was made and then denied. An F and F isn’t easy to claim back unless buyer shows an account hack, it isn’t sufficient to merely say they made a mistake or sent it didn't get anything in return. An F and F payment is not linked to any goods or services, and is deemed a gift so you can’t even claim you received nothing in return, as nothing was expected.Lonelygambler said:You can start a charge back with F&F. You do this through your bank, it is likely Paypal will close your account. It can be done.

Thanks all. I now have a CRN. The bank have not re-debited the money from my account (yet).
Do I present the CRN to the bank?
Presumably I am best doing this shortly before the £44 is re-debited?
I assume contacting paypal is going down a bit of a rabbit hole.
Happy to be corrected on any of the above.

No point at all in trying PayPal - their warnings are clear and unambiguous about F and F , your only hope is the bank.bertiewill said:Thanks all. I now have a CRN. The bank have not re-debited the money from my account (yet).

the problem is that there is no reason that the bank should refund the money because the transaction was that you sent the money to your Paypal account from your bank / card and it arrived safely so there was absolutely no reason for the bank to refund it.
the fact that you then subsequently sent the money on to a scammer to buy something is nothing to do with the bank4 -
Having received the £44 refund on April 8th, I was told a month later that this money would be debited from my account (as mentioned earlier on this thread).
However the bank have not done this so it appears I have managed to get my money back!
Possibly a little fortunately.

There are no fees at either end of a F&F payment - so long as you're using a linked bank account, or your PayPal balance.soolin said:
I agree the money is lost but buyer doesn’t pay fees, the seller does so buyer didn’t even save anything b using F and F.cymruchris said:Yes - gone, gone, gone.
Friends and family, the fee free route, is, as the name suggests, for paying friends and family - ie people you know and trust.
Regular goods and services payments that attract fees are for paying people you don't know.
The fees are there partially to cover protection of goods or services not received (as in this case).
By circumventing the fees - you've left yourself with no protection.
Luckily it was £44 not £444 or £4444.0 -
well done for guessing no refund!bertiewill said:Having received the £44 refund on April 8th, I was told a month later that this money would be debited from my account (as mentioned earlier on this thread).
