Please can anyone explain an e sim to me. I have an iPhone, my provider is in the Uk Vodafone. I am traveling to Canada in May and would like to have the opportunity to keep in touch in places I cannot get WiFi (when traveling etc). I’m not experienced in this subject, could someone explain in simple terms what are my options. I’m traveling for 6 weeks and don’t want to keep this beyond my holiday. Thank you in advance.

Most phones these days take 1 physical sim and 1 esim (in the UK at least) so that gives you choices...

You can do as the website with paid advertising linked above suggests... keep a physical UK sim, get a UK based "international" esim and use that for data.

Alternatives are keeping a physical UK sim and getting a local esim when you are in Canada or exchange your UK physical sim for an eSim and get a physical sim in Canada. Final option is your own network may have free roaming in Canada depending on your tariff etc.

For a short stay there probably aint to much in it, if its an extended stay then these international esims are simple to use as you can preprepared etc but were notably more expensive when spending almost 6 months in country than a local sim.

If its better getting a local physical or esim depends very much on the country you go to... some have fully embraced them and others they are fairly rare meaning being able to adopt a esim here can be better. UK hasn't fully embraced them yet though so if you can do that depends on your network.

  • I travelled to Spain for 5 days and used a company called  Worldsim (www.worldsim.com/data-esim ).

Worked great and saved me the headache of making a local purchase.
