Got email telling me my bt contracts will end soon and will be paying £29.99 if I do nothing. Option to renew for another 24 months at £34.99. I thought it should be cheaper not higher.

It is odd that your renewal cost is higher but maybe the new 24 month contract doesn't have annual price hikes. In any case, I would take opportunity to get a better deal on your broadband - either haggling with BT or going somewhere else like Vodafone.
