  • Does anyone know if this phone (unlocked of course) would work on the 3 network?

Yes but only as a 2G phone and some have said 3 don't like it because they have to rent the bandwidth on O2's network to give that coverage as a backup service to their own 3G network based service, so it costs them money.

These are great phones but are showing their age in terms of compactness/weight - so do your homework if that is going to be an issue.

The P990i is a 3G phone so there's no reason why it shouldn't work fully with 3 network (provided it's unlocked of course)

I remember something about the 3G battery life being slightly less than when the phone is used in 2G mode, check the specs from Sony in case I'm mistaken!

There is a thread on unbranding and unlocking the 990i here

As this phone is quite large by today's standards I wanted to know if anyone can recommend a decent belt clip type case

    I saw this one for around £12 + P&P

Maybe mobile fun should wind their neck in, free advertising and they have a whinge!

Yes, that is true when you are in the region of 3G, it will connect to full 3G services even if you are not using it, the battery barely lasts a day, the simple way to over come this, is to keep it on Packet Switching, so it will know there is a 3G signal, but it doesn't connect to it, and when you browse the internet or make a 3G call, it will then connect to it, this solution is very easy to do and the battery becomes week long usable without a charge. I don't know why Sony E didn't incorporate this in the first place because there literally is NO advantage for it to continually be connected to the 3G services, as soon as you need it, it will connect (when it's not set to a constant connection) and so I can't see a point in the default settings.

Anyway, don't worry about the battery life on this phone, it isn't a problem and I haven't heard of any long term problems having following the handset from launch and programmed Symbian applications.
