Hi,

Is it possible to stop pre-approved payments on a credit card? By that I mean when a car hire company takes your credit card details months later they start taking amounts from your account - the amounts they are taking are in dispute and I want to withdraw my authorisation for them to take any more.. is this possible?

Basically I was tricked into signing a credit hire agreement when I was told it was a courtesy car reservation and now the firm, enterprise cars, are charging all hire amounts to my credit card despite them being able to claim it from the third party and also despite them mis-selling me credit hire (they were told and said they would use the direct reservation from the third party but ignored this to make more money, they also said when I asked my credit card would only be charged for fines but they are taking hire charges!)

They have already taken one amount and I'm really worried they will now take endless amounts.. help?

You need to speak with your bank and ask them to stop the payments. Banks have to stop CPA if you request them to.

Is this related to an accident claim and a car provided where your car is in for repairs?

If so you need to speak to whatever company set the arrangement up.

    Hi,

Yes it is an accident claim all through the third parties insurance. They set up a direct hire reservation with enterprise, but instead of using that enterprise then fraudulently put me on a contract hire instead so they could make more money!

When I found out I told them to collect the car, then they charged me for it directly even though 1. The contract was fraudulently used and 2. The money should have been recovered from third party anyway.

Simple answer is, No you can not stop a car hire co taking payments.

These are not continuous payment authority that you can stop.

Surely if the op gave them the card details and months later they are deducting payments its CPA?

Not really, they are trying to take payment for what they see as an existing debt that the OP signed a contract on. Whether they should be taking payments for the contract is more of the question.

I spoke to the credit card and they put a block on the card and cancelled it also, which they said would stop any more payments but I'm not sure if this is correct having read contradicting advice.

They also opened a chargeback for misrepresentation.

Car Hire is not a CPA. They have this nicely covered the the T/C. Unlike a CPA they are not regular amounts, or taken from everyone when you hire a car. Unlike a CPA.

I agree that pre-approved payments cannot be stopped.

You can dispute them with your card provider but only when they have been debited to your account.
