If he got residency 3 months ago then he has been living there for over 5 years so he should have set up his Spanish health care a long time ago.
As somebody with residency he can forget about GHIC and will have no recourse to NHS services apart from emergency treatment on visits to the UK

He only went over there a year ago,  they then got a civil partnership so he could get an immediate residency. All a bit of a whirl wind really.

Can happen.... I met my wife in an online war game... we spent less than a week together before deciding to get engaged and pursue the very expensive and lengthy immigration processes, applications, requirements including marrying quickly.. she returned home to make application and several Visas later and after lots of stress and nearly 9 years together in the UK just a few hours ago she became British.

Being a little blunt perhaps... but.. his life.. his decisions and to be honest his research to do. If he's old enough to make these decisions then he's old enough to figure out his healthcare entitlements and options in Spain and of course if ever he returns to UK. When I first saw this thread I didn't think it was anything to do with the NHS or healthcare... reading between lines now I'm convinced this is about you.... got to give him freedoms and space to make his own successes and mistakes perhaps.

Yes a bit blunt. Just posted for a bit of advice not a sermon,  he has his freedom and a lot of space between here and Spain. Young people don't think about these things,  and I, m sure he hasn't and as a parent you never stop worrying about your children,  but thank you anyway:)

:) When I moved to Spain to live (aged also 24 at the time) I didn't even contact my parents for 2 months...lol... mother thought I'd died... but I was just so busy organising my new life and business. Ultimately though.. the bolded... if he doesn't then he has to start... and best way to start is by being forced to. Unless he has intellectual or other disablements that means he needs support to deal with day to day life (including finding out information for himself) and decisions then really he needs to be resolving any concerns over his healthcare options. He also has a Spanish partner to help and rest assured the 'ex-pat' communities out there and in my experience even better the Spanish themselves are good for local advice.

I bet you'll worry..lol.. yes... but ultimately for NHS that's only if he returns to live in the UK.... if I ever were to leave the UK again actually the NHS would be one thing I would not miss.... it ain't that great... it completely lacks any real patient focus or information coherence albeit it is broad in service. I sit here typing with smashed ribs since early January that the NHS has shown no interest in... that caused severe repeated infections that almost killed me.. only when I coughed up blood in front of a doctor did they take me seriously (and even then they screwed up the prescription leading to my collapse on a 4th visit to the pharmacy to collect it).. that delayed treatment led to damage to lungs that left them telling me it was likely lung cancer... carried out tests and never bothered to tell me I didn't have cancer... and all my appointments and tests are arranged the wrong way around. Wouldn't miss it at all...lol... and there are no NHS dentists available across much of the UK... even then the service is dreadful (it's reactive not preventative) and not even cheap.
