Smart meter reading

Hi , Switching supplier and asked to give final reading to both companies. The readings on my meter and smart meter, are much higher ,than reading shown my account . I switched from economy to standard tariff a few months ago and this is where the difference in numbers appears to be coming from . Do I give new supplier the actual reading on my meter / smart meter( which includes the now defunked night time reading ) or reading on my account? Thos could mean supplier A has a different end reading than Suppler B has for start .

If you are now on a single rate smart meter you need to give the old day rate reading NOT the total reading. If you have a smart meter with a numbered keypad, press the 6 to get the reading rather than the 9.
If you have another type, find the reading that matches the one on your latest bill & give that one.
When the meter was reconfigured from E7 to single rate, the night rate with stop recording & everything will click up on the old day rate but it will still be on the meter so the total will still be the combined reads.

My suggestion is that you take photographs of all the readings your meter provides, pressing different buttons as necessary.  That way if some error arises you will have the evidence to show what has gone wrong.

There is a lot of unknowns that make it difficult to tell what is or has gone on

Fundamentally the readings have to essentially agree for the current metering.

How many meters did you have / do you now have - and when (if) were the changed   ? ( as you say meter and smart meter)

As you will owe money to one supplier or another purely based on dates of switch and a matched reading on that date.

You will get a final bill from the old supplier - but that will be for all energy used to leaving date.

And the new supplier will bill from the same end reading going forward.

If their is a significant mismatch the old supplier is legally allowed to refuse the switch.  Especially if leaving with a debt - which given your comment about higher readings on meter vs bills is a possibility.

The propblem I have is that having a single rate tariff applied to an economy 7 meter - unless they reprogrammed the meter - doesn't necessarily stop both registers operating - it could simply be applying the same rate to both readings when converts to £ cost on bill.

On e7 you had 2 rates - 2 readings,  x months apart, difference  - multiplied by respective peak and off peak unit rates.

But critically if used the same meter configuration, you may have been billed using 2 readings 2 non zero differences at the single unit rate.

Do you know if both the registers are still operating or whether your meter (if smart and WAN connected of course ) has been reprogrammed to be purely single register recording.

But your meter could initially have had say 3 operating consumption readings on display menus.

    total,
    peak
    and
    off peak.

Whereas others may just toggle between peak and off peak.

And your bills would have been using peak and off-peak registers not total when economy 7.

Looking at the existing supplier bills or monthly statements

How do the readings on your meter now compare to the latest bills - which register or registers do you think they are using on those bills ?

Are the bill readings stated as actual / smart rather than estimated ?

Do the day and night registers still both accumulate consumption ?

I would actually strongly disagree with the above comment re day rate only depending on exactly how your new supplier is going to operate the account - on the basis you have a single rate smart meter - because you dont or rather may not - unless its been physically changed.

If no other reason if old supllier has 2 readings - the new supllier will expect to agree those 2 readings with old supplier.

And if it isn't changing that's zero cost going forward anyway.

    But definitely wrong if
A if the off peak register is still operating
B if the supplier downloads its e7 configuration along with its e7 rates (*) on takeover

(*) As if the meter type as installed was E7 - on the national database - a new supplier may well put you at least initially on an economy e7 tariff in any case.  Edit as some users posts here - in a similar situation - with e7 meters billed at single rate at current supplier - have found when switching suppliers they are then defaulted to e7 dual rates again - not single rate billing.

You might have noticed a warning you are on e7 or multirate metering when signing up to new supplier on line.  I certainly do when asked for quotes with some - but not all.

I'd be tempted to get your meter readings resolved with your current supllier vs current bills - and check exactly what your new supplier actually expects - based on not only tariff but meter type.

When you switch from economy 7 to single rate, you still need to give both readings.   However, the supplier will apply the same rate to both readings.

So, is that the case with the existing supplier?
