When was your previous equipment supplied ? , there is a date before which any equipment supplied doesn’t need to be returned, if you are concerned that you could dispose of it , then be asked to return it , hang onto it for the time being .1

From BT websiteiniltous said:When was your previous equipment supplied ? , there is a date before which any equipment supplied doesn’t need to be returned,We made some changes to our Terms & Conditions on 13 December 2019, meaning that BT Hubs and TV boxes are being loaned to you. So if you joined us or have renewed your contract on or after this date, you’ll be charged for not returning equipment to us. You’ll have 60 days to return it from the date you stopped using it before we charge you.

My SIL had a BT router blow up with a lightning strike and they sent a return bag in the new one. If you are worried get instructions to dispose of it in writing, e-mail will do.
Never associate with idiots on their own level, because, being an intelligent man, you'll try to deal with them on their level - and on their level they'll beat you every time.
Being hated by idiots is the price you pay for not being one of them.
