If I plug my phone into my laptop there's an option to download photos but I've no idea how to make this happen.
Moto G5 to Lenovo if that makes any difference.
What ultimately I need to do is to get these photos on to OH's old pc so he can put them in an album, edit etc. He tried plugging my phone into his pc but apparently didn't get the download option. He's quite used to downloading from his actual camera.
I could of course email them all to him but that would mean about 5 at a time on a lot of emails.

When you plug the phone into the PC, click on "This PC" you should then be able to navigate to where the photos are stored (SD Card/Internal memory) You should be able to copy them to a folder on the PC.0

Do your photos not upload to Google Photos automatically?
From there you can make them accessible to whomever you choose.0 -

As long as your phone is logged into your google account (check in Settings / Google) then when you go to https://photos.google.com/ and you are also logged in there, then all your photos should be there too. From there you can download and edit them.

If you have an Android phone (which you do!) then presumably you have a google account and know the login details for it? Your photos are all likely to be saved on the phone and on the Google Photos app in "the cloud" so if you go on a laptop, sign-in to the same Google account and click on Photos under the 3x3 grid of Google stuff on the top right, you should miraculously see all the photos you want.
NB if the laptop is signed into some other Google account then this won't work as described above, you'll need to log in to the same google account as the phone

From that website you can download and edit them.

Photos taken with my Android phone save to Google, but I email them as I don't do large batches and open on a Kindle, so that they upload to Amazon Photos. I can put them in albums in Amazon. Or I can download them into my Kindle files or PC folders from email, depends what I use to open them. Then it's easy to add them to the media library on my website and edit. I built most of my (seventh) website using a Kindle ! Just launched today. If I had a lot of them I think I would use a memory stick but I would still need to load them into the website.1
