As above, it would be worth sharing more detail but as a minimum he should change all passwords.

Reinstalling all of the PC software on top of a fresh Windows install (or Mac equivalent?) would be preferable but there'd be a lengthy list of tasks to complete if not going down that route, especially thoroughly disinfecting the PC of malware.

Hopefully they don't save all passwords/log-in infomation in a file?

If anyone does store sentive information on their PC, use something like Veracrypt to strongly encrypt the file. Or better, encrypt the file to a usb stick.

Such a precaution is useful in case the device is lost or stolen, but not much use if the contents are accessed on a compromised device.

An encrypted file is useless to anyone without the key. Be that a hacker or a thief.

    1) Ensure the device has no online access.
    2) Copy any media to an external storage device……contents should be considered potentially infected.
    3) Complete wipe and re installation of OS etc.
    4) Ensure comprehensive AV and Malware detection software is installed.
    5) Scan all backed up files for any infection before copying back.
    6) Change any and all passwords/logins.

Above is only way to be 100% safe.

"been hacked" needs to be explained, as there must have been a vector for the attack.  Generally the built in Windows firewall and malware prevention is entirely adequate unless you work hard at circumventing it, or let randoms initiate or take over a remote session (e.g. Teamviewer).

If you or he don't know enough to explain how the hack occurred then complete wipe, reformat and re-install of the operating system, then restore data from a pre-hack backup - you should scan these files before restoring them.  Passwords to all online services should be changed as soon as possible and two factor authentication enabled where available.

I say we take off and nuke it from orbit, it's ...
  • Thank you all....
He clicked on a link to download an attachment and within seconds he was locked out of his email account, youtube channel, steam account  and probably other things too.
Banking security has now been changed.
His google email account is still not sorted nor the youtube channel with a lot of revenue on.
It's so difficult to find where to report the hacking to try to recover everything.
