I had a problem at Asda around May , well I bought it reduced as it had 2 days left before best before. Took a glass and it tasted foul, tasted like it had been left in sun for days.

Took it back next day and was refused a refund due to their policy saying milk and bread products can only be taken back on day of purchase and within 15 minutes of buying!

ha ha, what a load of rubbish, as long as you have your receipt to prove you didn't buy it out of date they should refund you. Would of done in the one i work at

i realised in the q the other day at a shopm something was out of date so the assistant said sorry and changed it i think the reason is sometimes people are taking things from the back not the front and they get left.

i wonder just how ppl dont take things back due to it only being for the sake of 20p, imagine a whole weeks worth of shoppers doing that, i find it very annoying when i have my 2 youngest kids with me when i go shopping, with my attention already focused on them, and youre saying we, the shoppers, should check for things out of date?
i dont think so, i dont get paid for having to do so, its their job, and so it should be done, i wonder just how much does get missed like this, and even if they think cos noone complains for the sake of 20p, i wonder how much they actually 'do not bother' with. we wouldnt keep stuff out of date in our cupboards and fridges, so why should we be expected to buy it?
As some of you have said, once you tell them, they search the whole lot for anything else being out of date, so just why are they waiting for a customer to notice and alert them when it should be done before hand.

Found baked goods, a whole day out of date.

How on earth would you have described 2 days out of date?

A while ago I bought reduced price chicken breasts that were being sold on their use by date IYSWIM. I got them home and shoved them in teh freezer. When I used two of them later, they smelled funny :( I ate them anyway as did h2b and we weren;t ill, but I chucked the rest anyway and have noticed since that often the meat reduced is within date but is off. I think maybe they don;t chill it properly. I just check carefully before buying now.

I bought some biscuits that were out of date at Tesco's, rang the store who said bring it back and I would get a refund. Not really worth it for a pound I thought. Then after a while I thought well if everyone did not take them back Tesco's are quids in. So I rang their customer service freephone number. Lovely fella, apologised profusely and sent me a £5 voucher, which I received the next day. When in doubt try, try, try again.

I would definitely say that you should not eat a yoghurt or any other food that has gone past it's Use By date. Any food will eventually display obvious signs of deterioration if kept for a long time past the date but bacteria may be developing even if stored at the correct temperature. Food past its sell by date can appear and taste normal but will still make you very ill if you eat it. Best Before dates are different, the food is still safe to eat within a reasonable time but there may be some deterioration in quality.
But the use by date will always be well before the product is actually likely to go off. Products don't always go off at the same rate, so maybe a week 10% will be bad, 25% after 2 weeks, etc. Stores won't want any of their products to go bad before the use by date, so they'll set it early even though maybe 90% of the product will be fine to eat after the date. I had some yogurt yesterday dated 26 Dec and it was fine...

I also buy quite a bit of reduced meat, which I usually repackage, checking at the same time that the meat is in good condition - if its not I phone them up straight away or take it back the next day if I can.

I was told once that your not supposed to just freeze meat bought in supermarket store packaging  , but since I've run into 'off' meat before, its usually worth doing.
