Getting to  one of your apps via Settings seems rather long winded. If you can find how to display all your apps you can drag the icon for it from there onto the desktop

Press and hold on a blank part of the home screen. A menu will pop up

Tap 'Home Settings' make sure that Lock Screen is NOT turned on.

Next, go to the App drawer. Press and hold on the app you want on the Home Screen. When a menu appears keep holding on the app and drag it to the left or right. You'll see the Home Screen appears and you can place the app wherever you want.

To add a widget, press and hold a blank area of the home screen. When a menu pops up then tap Widgets

WOW!  Now I've got too many apps on my home screen but I'm sure I can get rid of the ones that I almost never use!!  (I hope, without actually deleting them!!)

Apps aren't actually on your home screen.  What you see on your home screen are shortcuts to the app.  Removing an app from the home screen does not remove it from the device.

Yes, it's even easier. On the Home Screen, press and hold the app you want to drag it slightly, you'll see two words at the top of the screen . Drag the app to:

Remove - remove the app from your Home Screen but leave it in the app drawer

Uninstall - completely deleted the app from your phone.

Some Google and System apps can't be uninstalled. For those you'll only see the Remove Option
