Guidance with Lufthansa

Hi there,
I recently flew from San Francisco to Edinburgh, via Frankfurt which I booked through Lufthansa. The San Francisco to Frankfurt leg was operated by United, but the latter leg was Lufthansa.
The San Francisco - Frankfurt flight was delayed by an hour and as a result I missed my connection to Edinburgh. I was rebooked on a later flight, but the result was that I arrived at Edinburgh more than 5 hours later than booked.
I contacted Lufthansa and assumed this would be a straightforward case for compensation, but they have denied that I am eligible. Am I missing something?
Thanks!

Compensation is payable by the operating airline of the delayed/cancelled flight. As this was United and the flight was not departing from EU/UK it is not covered by the EU/UK regulations so no compensation due.0
