Maybe ask if the new rack needs programming to the car.
This is often called Proxy Alignment and not to be confused with actual, physical wheel alignment.

It's not unusual these days that electronically controlled parts like this need matching/programming to the cars main ECU, otherwise it doesn't know where it's at.

I would think it would need to know where straight ahead and each ends of the steering are electronically.

It's often the same case when fitting a new battery. As most cars now "Smart Charge" they need to be told the battery is new.

Can only be programmed if its able to communicate, ATM vcds is not even detecting it.

After replacing the battery did you have to wait and drive it around for a bit

Took it for 2nd opinion who diagnosed and said it's a wiring issue as the oil sensor and steering wires run on the same wire loom.

Is it worth pursuing Reclaim of labour or is it consequential loss.

Mechanic may have misdiagnosed the fault, or there could have been 2 problems, only way to be certain is to test the original rack which I still have.

Update, it was indeed wiring fault, the canbus connector was tested and no voltage coming down the middle plug, wire was traced and break was found near the air filter.

I now have two steering racks a new one in the car and the original.

Is it worth seeking compo from the first garage as they misdiagnosed, and either lied about wiring fault or were incompetent in their testing.
