Overseas working in Norway

I’ve just accepted a job in Norway and they will be paying me in Norwegian Krona.

This will be taxed at Norwegian rates.

Does anyone have any advice regards bank accounts to accept the money, any implications regards bringing the money back into the uk or any general advice?

Do you bank with Handelsbanken by any chance?  They're really helpful but I've never needed them to set up an overseas account

So far no Norwegian account but I’ll certainly consider the recommendation.

Take a look at the Wise multi-currency account, payments can be received in NOK to the GBP account IBAN, later when you have a local bank account it can be used for conversion.

    Evolution, not revolution
  • Will you be relocating to Norway or splitting your time between UK and Norway?

There won’t be any restriction or issue bringing the money into the Uk as such, but you’ll need to check your tax position if you become both Norwegian tax resident and Uk tax resident for the same tax year.

If you're moving overseas long-term then I'd reccomend a you get a local Norwegian bank account. Otherwise if it's a short-term thing, then something of the likes of Wise would be your best bet. They provide local account details in a number of currencies to allow you to be paid directly in the foreign currency, and you can then manage conversion to GBP (if required) at a significantly better rate than your UK bank would.

Also can't really comment on the tax situation, but I'd suggest you look to see what (if any) double taxation treaties exist to see what your tax position will be. I'd also look to establish if HMRC would still consider you a UK tax resident or not.
